Hats From the Heart Are Designed for the Young Patients of Children?s Hospital
Seattle, WA (PRWEB) December 6, 2007 -? The hats are funny, colorful, clever, cute, interesting, punky, and wild; they come in all shapes and sizes and are meant for kids who want to show their true personalities. How would you cover your head if something like cancer happened to you? The students at the International Academy of Design and Technology (IADT-Seattle, www.iadtseattle.com) have found a solution. These first-year fashion design students are learning much more than how to construct a garment, they are making hats for children who are sick and giving them the gift of hope and inspiration.
?It is fun to see patients in the hospital with something unique they can identify with. Anyone can go out and buy a hat but these are very special to our children because they are made with thought and care,? said Denise Green, Volunteer Manager at Children?s Hospital.
The idea for this project came to Maria ?Malusa? Pinto, Fashion Design Instructor at IADT - Seattle, when her friend?s 10-year old son was battling leukemia--he lost all his hair as a result of chemotherapy. Malusa knew she could do something to help him through the painful situation, so she made him a hat ?When I brought him the hat, he loved it, and so did those around him.?
From this one gift, an ongoing and lasting program was born. Each quarter, fashion design students in Clothing Construction I class are given the assignment to design and construct a hat. Each student makes two hats. Donations happen twice a year during mid-terms and before the break. IADT students deliver their creations to the children at Children?s Hospital 4800 Sand Point Way NE #5G-1 Seattle, WA 98105. ?We so appreciate each and every one of them,? added Denise Green.
Malusa Pinto teaches her students, who are future designers, to think about making hats that are not only beautiful, but also full of meaning. ?No matter how little you are your hair is still important. I think everyone likes their hair. Everyone likes the idea of hair making a new shape for their head. If you don?t have hair, the hat helps you to make a fun, new shape. It keeps you warm too!?
