California Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Sohrab Gollogly, Performs First Ever Total Hip and Scoliosis Surgeries for Non-Profit Children's Surgical Center i
Monterey, CA (PRWEB) December 21, 2007 -- During a 10 day trip in December 2007, Dr. Sohrab Gollogly completed 10 life changing surgical procedures for the Children's Surgical Center in Cambodia (www.csc.org). The Monterey-based surgeon performed the first-ever total hip replacements and the first instrumented scoliosis surgeries in Cambodia's history.
"I am fortunate to be able to give back to an organization I trust to take great care of patients and that I trust to make efficient use of donor's time, money and resources," said Gollogly. The Children's Surgical Center (CSC) in Cambodia is run by Gollogly's father who is also an orthopedic surgeon and humanitarian. In this time there, he trained Cambodian surgeons and nurses in advanced orthopedics and spinal surgery and helped pave the way for a surgical team from Cedars Sinai hospital in Los Angeles that will continue the process of educating the CSC team in 2008.
"Citizens of Cambodia are not provided with welfare systems like workers compensation and there are very few resources for disabled persons. An accident left untreated literally can end a life and ones ability to make a living," said Gollogly.
Gollogly performed spine surgery on a young man in his 20's who had been partially paralyzed as the result of a motorcycle accident. He had an unstable fracture dislocation of the thoracic spine that left him bed ridden with terrible bed sores and the inability to even use a wheelchair independently.
The CSC, based in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, aims to improve the quality of life for disabled poor people by providing rehabilitation surgery and general rehabilitation programs. Integral to this mission is a program of training local surgeons and health workers, focusing on the development of sustainable health services for Cambodians.
"It is excellent for the professional growth of Monterey Spine and Joint Inc. to gain experience and exposure to developing world pathology as often times the case there are far more complex and challenging than the kind of cases we see in California," says Gollogly.
The four adults he operated on had curvatures of the spine averaging more than 85 degrees. Gollogly presented the cases to his co-workers at CHOMP memorial and his colleagues at Monterey Spine and Joint. Even with the complexity of cases seen in Cambodia, CSC in Cambodia performs an average of 4000 surgeries each year with a staff of just 200 Cambodian nationals and a rotation of visiting surgeons from around the globe who also help train Cambodian surgeons.
