University of Calgary Class Donates Proceeds from Vector Marketing/Cutco Sales to Children's Wish Foundation
CALGARY, Alberta (Business Wire EON) February 21, 2008 -- The announcement was made by Dr. Derek Hassay, assistant professor of marketing, who teaches this experiential learning program, known as "Selling Smiles 101". The proceeds from these sales helped grant the wish of a local teenager suffering from a life-threatening illness. The young man and his parents traveled to New Zealand to participate in extreme sports and visit the "Lord of the Rings" film sites.
For several years, Hassay has partnered with Vector Marketing, a direct sales company which trains students how to sell high-end cutlery through in-home personal demonstrations. In four terms, the program has raised over $64,000 for the foundation's Alberta Chapter.
"The best way for students to learn is to go in the marketplace and sell," said Hassay. "By aligning with Cutco and Vector, students take the theory from the classroom and apply it to a real-world sales environment.
"The course skills acquired are valuable for personal growth and career preparation," said Hassay. "Just as rewarding is our participation with the Children's Wish Foundation. Aligning with this charity was an incentive for our students to sell and give back."
Cutco Cutlery, based in Olean, New York, is the largest kitchen cutlery manufacturer in North America. Founded 59 years ago, Cutco sells its products through a network of college students in Canada and the United States. Vector Marketing offers a sales training program that teaches students a wide range of skills, including time management, presentation, lead generation, customer service and how to work in a commission-structured environment.
Students, according to Hassay, aren't graded on actual sales, but rather on how they manage the process. "Basically, we're creating a corporate sales department," he said. "Students are required to develop a marketing strategy, make sales presentations, create sales reports, and then critique themselves after each demonstration."
